Drive The Ridge!

Drive The Ridge!

Friday, September 23, will mark our final High Performance Driver Education day of the 2016 driving season. And this will be our only 2016 event at The Ridge Motorsports Park. The Ridge is only about three years old. This new state-of-the-art facility, only 90 minutes from Seattle, is a treat to drive. Lots of elevation changes and groups of corners that have a nice, natural rhythm, make for a memorable driving experience.

Referring to the track map, at the end of the front straight there are two left turns. The second one leads uphill, reminiscent of Breitscheid at the Nurburgring. Those who have been to the ‘Ring know this as the lowest part of the track. Coming out of this section, on either the ‘Ring or The Ridge, you’ve got a lot of compression on the car as you both turn and climb the hill.

The upper portion of The Ridge has several sequences with blind corners but also must be tied together to get right. The section from turn 6 to turn 11, in particular, has a very flowing nature.

Turn 13 is where the transition begins to come off the plateau and return down to the lower level of the track. Turns 13 through 15 are somewhat like The Corkscrew at Laguna Seca but also have their own flavor. And 15 is really the start of the straightaway, so it is important for getting a good launch. All-in-all, this is a technical track that is fun to learn and drive for those of all skill levels. It is also very safe as the surface is forty feet wide and there are good runoffs everywhere. Watch some YouTube videos to get a feel for the track if you’ve not been there before.

If you leave early you should be able to make it from Seattle in 90 minutes. If you have time and want to make a bit of a short vacation, spend the night before at the Little Creek Casino-Resort nearby.

With both Pacific Raceways and The Ridge nearby, we are spoiled for choice here in the Puget Sound area. Don’t take these terrific tracks for granted, get out there and enjoy both!

I encourage you all to put September 23, a Friday, on your calendars to attend the final track day of the year at the Ridge!
